Crawdad as she pulled away from the dock this morning. |
We are sitting at a beautiful marina along the Hudson River, just past the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, and across the Hudson River from the Twin Towers site in Manhattan. Left Great Kills this morning after helping Crawdad leave. Leisurely trip up New York Harbour, under the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, and past Fort Wadsworth, one of 2 forts that used to guard the entrance to New York. Then up past the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, and into our marina. The marina is actually in a channel that was once a canal that linked Philadelphia with New York City. We had a nice leisurely trip because we weren't going far, but we spent the time threading our way among numerous water taxis, pleasure craft, a couple of ships and a tow. It was not difficult, but we had to pay attention (rather than gawking at everything like we wanted to) and all of the traffic created a lot of wakes.
Our only disappointment with the day was that since it was really hot and humid, there was a haze (smog??) over the city, so we couldn't see as much as we had hoped. The marina here is next to a state park, and we walked some of the paths in the park this afternoon, around the waterfront and almost behind the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Ellis Island served as a portal of entry to the US for over 12 million immigrants from 1892 to 1954. The facility has served many purposes since then, is now an immigration museum. Three other looper boats here at the marina, Ginger Snap, just doing a small loop this year, Blue Skies, just started the loop, and Dick and Pat on Gypsea. We have come across Gypsea several times before, first time we have really had a chat with them. Dinner on the boat while we watched a big thunderstorm with lots of wind. Glad we are tied to a secure dock. We are hoping the storm will clear the humidity out of the air. Plan to move on a little further north up the Hudson River tomorrow.
