Great Kills Yacht Club, Staten Island, New York

Crookes Point, as you enter Great Kills Harbor on Staten Island
Great Kills Yacht Club (Kills in Dutch means river)
Left Brielle at about 9 this morning, just as the strong tide was turning (slack tide) so easier to get out of our slip and underway. We actually couldn't believe the strength of the current coming under the railroad bridge just past the marina.
Very smooth ride up the New Jersey coast and around Sandy Hook. The ocean was almost flat, very pleasant. This is the last of our journey on big water, from here to home we are on rivers or canals. We had not looked forward to this 140 some miles on the Atlantic, but it turned out to be quite pleasant. Lots and lots of fishing boats out today. Unfortunately we didn't see dolphins or whales.
Arrived at this yacht club on Staten Island, the only way that you can stay here is if a member lets you in. One member at this club is a looper who welcomes other loopers, so we were able to come in. This is a protected bay and very pleasant. Lots of friendly people here. We went for a walk this afternoon, but very hot and humid, so didn't go far. Staten Island looks like it should be part of New Jersey, but it is actually New York. Apparently many years ago both states claimed the island, so it was settled by a sailboat race. The boater from New York won, so the island now is part of New York.
Went out for dinner with Jim and Gloria. We say goodbye to them here; we continue up the Hudson while they go to Connecticut to visit Gloria's daughter and home to Michigan to see a new grandson. They will continue in a couple of weeks. We will move up to Liberty Landing in the morning.
