There were radio controlled sailboat races out in the harbour here at River Dunes
|
Left Beaufort this morning under a cloudy sky, rained off and on as we travelled, but the rain very kindly stopped before we arrived so we docked in dry weather. As we travelled today, we saw some dolphins, several pelicans. Not sure how much further north we can travel and still see them. River Dunes is a new marina in a dredged channel and basin, with houses, building lots all around it. There is a huge club house, a pool and 2 hot tubs, even the bathrooms and showers are worthy of mention. Everything is very well done here. We went for a walk around part of the area, then found out that there are bicycles here for the use of the transient boaters, so biked around more of it. Although the restaurant is not open tonight, the dockmaster asked the cook to prepare a meal, so we had a buffet dinner of chicken, potatoes, vegetables and salad, at a cost of $12 each. Very nice meal and a good chance to meet some of the other boaters here. As we were going up for dinner we could smell smoke in the air, apparently from a forest fire ahead of us around the Alligator River. The footprint of the fire is now about 12,000 acres, so a lot of forest lost. The smoke is hanging heavy over this marina tonight.
We plan to stay here for a couple of days.

Looking out over the marina, you can see the rain clouds overhead |
